Seagate BlackArmor NAS Servers Using the Backup Manager Feature of the Web UI

Explains the numerous options for BlackArmor NAS' Backup Manager tool.

 

The Backup Manager, found under the Seagate BlackArmor Server STORAGE option provides the following features (use one of the following links to jump to a section):

 

USB to NAS

The following provides the steps necessary to back up data on a USB Drive to a Seagate BlackArmor NAS Server.
Scheduled Backup

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click Schedule Backup. The Schedule Backup page opens in your Browser.
  3. Do one of the following:
    - If this is your first scheduled backup. Click on the USB to NAS radio button located underneath the Task List
    - If this is your second/subsequent scheduled backup, click on the New Job button and the click on the USB to NAS radio button located underneath the Task List
     
  4. Choose a Folder on the USB Drive to Back Up From (the source) and click on the Add button. Repeat this process for every folder selected you wish to back up
  5. Choose a Folder on the NAS to Back Up To (the destination).
  6. Enter a Backup Description in the field provided.
  7. From Frequency, check Daily or check individual boxes for days you wish to perform your USB to NAS backup
  8. Check the Hour and Minute you wish to schedule your USB to NAS backup
    Note: Hours are shown in military time and minutes are broke down in 10-minute intervals.
  9. When all selections are made, click on the Schedule button Your backup will appear in the Task List window and run at its scheduled time.

USB to NAS On-Demand Backup

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click on the USB to NAS link located in the Left Frame of the Web UI.
  3. Choose a Folder on the USB Drive to Back Up From (the source) and click on the Add button. Repeat this process for every folder selected you wish to back up
  4. Choose a Folder on the NAS to Back Up To (the destination).
  5. Click the Start button. Your backup will launch automatically. A Status Bar will show the Backup's Progress. When finished, the Status Bar will show 100%.

NAS to USB Scheduled Backup

The following provides the steps necessary to back up data on a Seagate BlackArmor NAS Server to a USB Drive.

Configuring Backup Service on a BlackArmor NAS Server:

Not every system can be used as a Backup Server to a BlackArmor NAS. Only a Seagate BlackArmor NAS Server can be a Backup Server for another BlackArmor Server. The following procedure gives the steps to Enable the Backup Service and further configure a BlackArmor NAS to be a Backup Server.

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click on the Sever Setting link located in the Left Frame of the Web UI. The Backup Server Service page opens.
  3. Check the Backup Service box. The following options/information needs to be provided.
    Auth name
    Auth password
    Volume selection
    Alias name
     
  4. Enter this information as needed and click the Submit button. The BlackArmor NAS Server is now configured to be a Backup Server to other BlackArmor NAS Servers on your network segment.

NAS to NAS Scheduled Backup

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click Schedule Backup. The Schedule Backup page opens in your Browser.
  3. Do one of the following:
    - If this is your first scheduled backup. Click on the Network Backup radio button located underneath the Task List
    - If this is your second/subsequent scheduled backup, click on the New Job button and the click on the Network Backup radio button located underneath the Task List
  4. Choose a Folder on the NAS Drive to Back Up From (the source) and click on the Add button. Repeat this process for every folder selected you wish to back up
  5. Choose a Folder on the NAS Server to Back Up To (the destination)
  6. Click on the Detect IP Address button to locate BlackArmor NAS Servers configured to be a Backup Server on your LAN Segment.
  7. Select the Backup Server from the drop-down field. The selected server's IP Address and Target Server Name appear in their respective fields
  8. Click on the Alias Name drop-down field and choose the alias from the list provided. The backup server's Alias name and Auth name appear in their respective fields
  9. Type in the Auth password in its field
  10. Click on the Test Connection button. A Message for Webpage opens informating you that connection and login are OK.
  11. Click on the OK button.
  12. Enter a Backup Description in the field provided.
  13. From Frequency, check Daily or check individual boxes for days you wish to perform your NAS to NAS backup
  14. Check the Hour and Minute you wish to schedule your NAS to NAS backup
    Note: Hours are shown in military time and minutes are broke down in 10-minute intervals.
  15. When all selections are made, click on the Schedule button. Your backup will appear in the Task List window and run at its scheduled time.

NAS to NAS On-Demand Backup

  3. Choose a Folder on the NAS Drive to Back Up From (the source) and click on the Add button. Repeat this process for every folder selected you wish to back up
  4. Choose a Folder on the NAS Server to Back Up To (the destination).
  5. Click on the Detect IP Address button to locate BlackArmor NAS Servers configured to be a Backup Server on your LAN Segment.
  6. Select the Backup Server from the drop-down field. The selected server's IP Address appears in its respective field
  7. Click on the Alias Name drop-down field and choose the alias from the list provided.
    Note: If the Alias Name does not apprear in the field, manually type it as needed.
  8. Type in the Auth name and Auth password into their respective fields
  9. Click on the Test Connection button. A Message for Webpage window opens informing you that connection and login are OK.
  10. Click on the OK button. Your backup is ready to launch
  11. Click the Start button. Your backup will launch automatically. A Status Bar will show the Backup's Progress. When finished, the Status Bar will show 100%.

Download The Task Log:

This option when selected will download/launch a Task Log that can be used to check the status of a NAS Backups. The following provides you with the steps needed for Download the Task Log.

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click Schedule Backup. The Schedule Backup page opens in your Browser.
  3. From the Task Monitor Box, select a backup and click on Download task log. Upon download the Task log opens into a Notepad file. Though not very user friendly, it's contents may be use by support when troubleshooting backup issues.

Modifying a Backup

Not all backups are meant to be the same all the time and may require modifications every once in awhile. The following provides the steps for Modifying a Backup.
Note: The backup being modified in this example is a NAS to USB Backup; other backup modification procedures may vary.

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click Schedule Backup. The Schedule Backup page opens in your Browser.
  3. From the Task Monitor window, select the backup you wish to change.
  4. Change the Hour and Minute you wish for your backup
    Note: Hours are shown in military time and minutes are broke down in 10-minute intervals.
  5. From Frequency, check Daily or check individual boxes for days you wish to perform your backup
  6. When all selections are changed, click on the Modify button. Your backup will appear in the Task List window and run at its newly changed/scheduled time.

Restore from a Backup

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click Restore. The Restore page opens in your Browser.
  3. Select a Restore from the list provided and then select the Destination Folder. Ensure that the proper destination path is used (e.g. manually type in unidentified folders and add a forward slash "/" at the end of each folder).
  4. Click Restore Now.
    Note: If you had to manually apply a destination path, you will be prompted to confirm this change - simply click OK to proceed.
  5. The Restore immediately launches. A status bar tracks the progress of the restoration process. When finished, the bar will show 100%.

Delete a Backup

  1. Mouseover STORAGE and select Backup Manager. The Task Monitor page opens in your Browser.
  2. Click Schedule Backup. The Schedule Backup page opens in your Browser.
  3. From the Task Monitor window, select the backup you wish to remove.
  4. Click on the Delete button. A Message for Webpage window opens asking if you wish to delete this record?
  5. Click on the OK button. When processing is complete, the record is deleted from the BlackArmor NAS Server.
