External Drive Not Detected in Windows

Troubleshooting detection problems with an external drive in Windows will begin in different places depending on
-whether the drive worked fine for a while (even just one time) but now no longer works,
-whether you are having trouble with a completely new installation, and
-whether you are in Windows Vista or XP/2000.

• Windows Vista - drive not detected at fresh install
• Windows Vista - drive once functioned correctly but now is no longer detected
  
• Windows XP/2000 - drive not detected at fresh install
• Windows XP/2000 - drive once functioned correctly but now is no longer detected
  


• Drive not detected in Windows 98 or Windows Me
