Barracuda 7200.11 SATA models with firmware SD04 or SD14

English | Deutsch | Español | Français | Italiano | Português | 中文(简体) | 中文(繁體) | 日本語 | 한국 (한국어)

A small number of Barracuda 7200.11 drives with firmware versions SD04 or SD14 may show and utilize only part of the available cache.  Please follow these steps to ensure that your system recognizes the full cache.

  1. Click here to determine your drive model number electronically.

Below are the Barracuda 7200.11 model numbers.  If the orange digit is any number other than those shown, Seagate recommends that you update the firmware on your drive:

    Model numbers

    1000 GB
    ST31000340AS

    750 GB
    ST3750330AS

    500 GB
    ST3500320AS

  2. If the drive bears one of the model numbers above then no action is required. If you do have an incorrect model number, please download SeaTools to determine your serial number.

  3. Once you have your serial number contact Seagate Technical Support to receive the AD14 firmware update.

Important:

  • Firmware updates to disk drives should be approached with a measure of caution.  All important data should be fully backed up before performing the update.

  • If you choose not to update, the drive will have a slightly slower data transfer rate due to under utilizing the full cache buffer on the disk drive.

More information:

The product label will state the correct physical cache size. (i.e. ST31000340AS) however, the drive will functionally operate with the incorrect cache size value.  This incorrect value will be passed from the drive, via "Identify Drive" command to the system BIOS, which in turn will now recognize the incorrect cache size.

Seagate has since rectified the issue and would like to assure its customers that all its Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives have been correctly built to the cache size as specified on the product label. We would also like to reassure our customers that the performance and reliability of our Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives have not been compromised.
