Inspiring the next generation in STEM
For many students, a career in technology becomes real the first time they step inside a workplace or meet someone doing the job. At Seagate’s Springtown site in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, our employees help create those moments by sharing their knowledge and giving young people a closer look at STEM careers.
Working with Ulster University, Queen’s University Belfast, GEMX, local schools, and community partners throughout the year, we offer workplace visits, careers panels, work experience, and engineering challenges that connect learning with the world of work.
Through these experiences, students learn about apprenticeships, placements, and graduate opportunities, as well as fields, such as data and artificial intelligence, photonics and sustainability.
We also partner with Futures for All, an organisation that supports young people from underserved backgrounds. Together, we give students opportunities to learn from industry professionals, gain practical experience, and meet role models working in STEM today.
Gemma Breslin, community partnership lead at Springtown, shares how our work is reaching more young people across the North West:
“Throughout the past year, Seagate has engaged hundreds of young people through a blend of virtual and in-person initiatives, allowing us to reach students locally, across Northern Ireland and in the UK. Together, we have developed programmes that ensure that more young people have access to opportunities, experiences and role models that inspire future career ambitions.”

Springtown’s collective work with universities, schools, and community organisations was recently recognised when the site received the regional North West Business Award for Educational Collaborator of the Year.
Our Seagate Springtown employees bring a personal connection to that collective effort by volunteering their time to share career stories and answer students’ questions. Those conversations can spark curiosity, build confidence, and help a young person see a future for themselves in STEM.
