The combined data of the media and entertainment sectors exceeds one zettabyte (ZB), or 1,000 exabytes (EB), and must all be stored and archived. That’s why it’s crucial for industry players to rethink their architecture for managing data and take reasonable steps to create a sustainable data economy.

We’re tackling rising data storage costs — sustainably.

In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, we address today’s data challenges and how innovative strategies, such as storage as a service, help predict and reduce escalating storage costs. Join us for valuable insights into elevating data management and Seagate’s commitment to a circular economy through refurbishing and reusing storage devices.

Sustainability Driven

Today’s linear ‘take-make-waste’ consumption model is unsustainable. In FY2024, we returned over 1.8 million hard drives and solid-state drives (SSD) back to service through repair, refurbishment, component extraction, and material recovery, helping to:

Reduce over 837,500 kilograms of e-waste
Transitioning to a circular drive economy prevents additional e-waste from entering landfills, contributing to a more sustainable IT ecosystem.

By 2028, 394 ZB of data will be generated — all of which needs to be stored and archived.

To meet skyrocketing demand, industry players must rethink their data management infrastructure and take responsible measures that support a sustainable data economy.

That’s why we’re scaling the Seagate Circularity Program to be global. By engaging our entire ecosystem of technology stakeholders, we can elevate the industry’s overall sustainability commitment. (Source: IDC Worldwide Global DataSphere Forecast 2024-2028; May 2024, IDC No. US52076424.)

Treasure, Not Trash

Extending the life of your hard drive helps extend the planet’s life, too.

In 2022, Seagate helped found the Circular Drive Initiative (CDI) — a collaboration with global leaders in digital storage, sustainability, and blockchain — which focuses on reducing e-waste by promoting and enabling the secure reuse of storage hardware.

Seagate ReStore Program

Choosing to recycle your old drive keeps valuable materials in circulation and reduces the environmental impact of e-waste. Our ReStore Program makes it easier to return your device responsibly — and rewards you with savings on your next Seagate upgrade.

Mindset Driven

Stop hard drive shredding. Shift to a mindset of sustainability. Despite modern state-of-the-art sanitization techniques, data security remains the biggest concern in adopting drive circularity. This leads to widespread hard drive shredding, with over 200 million devices disposed yearly. We're enabling the circular economy by providing a trusted and certified level of erasure.

Cryptographic Erase
Certified sanitisation of encryption keys ensures all drive data is completely removed — safely and efficiently.

Seagate Factory Certification Process

We take the following steps to make sure our factory recertified products live up to the Seagate quality standards:

  1. Sanitise: Overwrite data when applicable, following the Data Overwriting Process for Returned Products.
  2. Test: Confirm the product meets Seagate factory performance standards.
  3. Certify: Apply factory certification (or recertification, as applicable) labelling.*

* Product documentation — including specifications and warranties for Seagate products that include prime drives — do not apply to recertified products.
