2big Dock - USB 3.0 Hub Compatibility

This article provides information on the LaCie 2big Dock’s USB 3.0 hub port.

The LaCie 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3 provides great docking features including the USB 3.0 hub on the front that allows connecting devices for charging such as cell phones, data ingestion such as flash drives, external USB 3.0 hard drives, digital cameras or even peripherals such as mice and keyboards.

It’s important to know that some products may not function if they’re not designed to work when connected to a hub. The most common incompatibility refers to power consumption.

According to the USB specifications, a standard USB 3.0 port is capable of delivering up to 900mA (0.9A) which it's also what the hub USB 3.0 of your LaCie 2big Dock provides. So when connecting devices to the hub, please make sure that the power consumption of the attached device meets the power provided by the hub, otherwise the device may not be detected or not function the way you expect.

Some portable external hard drives, such as Seagate Backup Plus Fast or LaCie Rugged RAID, have two hard drives inside in a RAID configuration, so the power consumption is greater than what the hub is capable of providing.  For that reason, these devices do not work while connected to the hub of the 2big Dock.  You may received an error, such as the one below, which indicates that the device is pulling more than the 2big Dock is capable of providing.
