How to defragment a hard drive in Windows

Instructions for using the disk defragmentation tool in Windows.


Here are instructions to perform a Disk Defragmenter from Windows. The Disk Defragmenter is a tool that reorganizes and regroups data to help improve the performance of the computer and is beneficial to optimize the performance of the external hard drives.

Drives must be formatted NTFS for defragment to be available. Defragment is not available for exFAT formatted drives.

  1. On the keyboard, press the Windows Key () + E

  2. Once the (My) Computer / This PC is open, hover over the drive you want to perform the Defragmentation and right-click on the Seagate drive.
    Note: You may need to locate your drive in the Navigation pane to the left in Explorer.

  3. Click on Properties

  4. Click on Tools

  5. Click on Defragment or Optimize - varies by Windows version.

  6. To determine if the disk needs defragmentation, select the disk and click Analyze.
     Note: If the percentage is above 10%, then defragmentation is needed.  

  1. To start the defragmentation, click on Defragment disk or Optimize

  2. Click Close when it is concluded.
