Instant Backup included with the GoFlex drives has the ability to encrypt the a new backup through the advanced options button.

Note: Encrypted backups can only be restored using the Instant Backup software and your password.  If the password is lost, then the backup cannot be restored.

To encrypt a backup:

  1. Open Memeo Instant Backup from the Seagate Dashboard.
  2. Click Advanced Options.
  3. Click Encrypt my backup (in the right section of the window).
  4. Click OK.
  5. Click Start Backup to begin the backup, which will be stored as encrypted files on the GoFlex drive.

If the Encrypt my backup option is grayed out, it is indicating that you have an existing backup running. In that case, you will need to stop the backup and remove it (Instant Backup can only have one backup job at a time; Premium Backup does not have this limitation).

To remove a backup job:

  1. While Memeo Instant Backup is open, click Pause backup.
  2. Click Actions on the menu at the top of the Instant Backup screen.
  3. Click Remove backup.
Note: This will stop remove the existing backup and you will need to start the backup over.  If you agree, click Yes.

The option to encrypt should now be available in the Advanced Options screen.
