Seagate Product Take Back Program

Extending product life cycle for a more sustainable future.

What is the Seagate Product Take Back Program?

Seagate recognizes the need to move away from the “take, make, dispose” model towards a more efficient and circular economy. It is our responsibility to actively participate and spearhead circularity projects both internally and externally.

As collective citizens of this planet, the “circular economy” is an integral part of Seagate’s mission and business ethics. Seagate aims to improve product quality to extend the useful life of drives, while minimizing their impact on resources.

You Can Do Your Part

When you send your old or used hard drives to Seagate, you support the Circular Drive Initiative, where Seagate can securely sanitize all data on those drives, and recertify them for placement back into the market. This extends the life of the product, helps to reduce waste in landfills, and can reduce up to 18kg of carbon emissions.

Ensure Your Data Security

Seagate has partnered with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to achieve unified standards for media sanitization. Seagate uses industry-standard Secure Erase (ISO 27040/ NIST SP 800-88R1). These standards define a level of erasure that renders data recovery infeasible.

Our First Steps

In 2020, a circularity pilot with Dell was operationalized, resulting in 1.6 tons of scrap magnets being recycled. We also worked to improve our packaging and made several changes to our material types, recycled materials, and densification—all with the goal to save material use and energy.

Hassle-free Returns and Save on Your Next Purchase

There are three simple steps to participating in the Seagate Product Take Back Program—which we have outlined below in the “How to Apply” section. You can return any eligible drives to a Seagate Return Center or arrange for a free collection. Upon receiving the drives, Seagate will conduct a verification process. Finally, you will receive an E-Voucher from a Seagate authorized reseller for your next Seagate drive purchase.

Our Mission

Electronics represent the fastest growing domestic waste stream on earth, with the global total likely to reach upwards of 74.7 million tonnes by 2030.

At Seagate, we recognize our role in helping to shift the impact this waste can have on both the environment and humankind. This is why we are committed to building circularity into every drive we create.

Seagate commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 20% by 2025 and 60% by 2040. Seagate also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions 20% by 2025 and 60% by 2040.
