This demonstration underpins Seagate's leadership in serial I/O development and is a milestone for the industry. Seagate was the first to publicly demonstrate SAS dual-port 3 Gb/s data transfers. Seagate's first SAS disc drive will ship in the second half of the year. Seagate offers the only native SATA disc drive on the market and has shipped greater than 1.5 million SATA drives, twice as many as the competition.
"By showing full interoperability between Serial Attached SCSI and Serial ATA drives in a single enclosure, Seagate is demonstrating the unprecedented flexibility IT managers will enjoy with deploying SAS in the enterprise," said Jeff Loebbaka, Seagate vice president, global marketing. "Never before could IT managers run more efficient, manageable, streamlined storage systems similar to what Seagate is showing today. Consolidating drives using fewer, subsystems can save a substantial amount of both money and space, as well as reducing IT storage maintenance costs."
About Serial Attached SCSI Serial Attached SCSI is the next step for the enterprise industry's storage I/O standard interface. SAS technology extends SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 to the next-generation Direct Attach Storage (DAS) server and workstation markets while retaining device-level backward compatibility. And because the SAS physical layer is compatible with SATA, users will have the choice of populating SAS systems with either SATA or SAS hard disk drives, or a combination of both. Boasting features that liberate SCSI from its parallel predecessor, Serial Attached SCSI delivers new levels of breakthrough speed and connectivity while retaining the functionality and reliability of SCSI.
Seagate's serial I/O expertise and early R&D investment into developing Serial Attached SCSI will provide customers with best-in-class, reliable, and time-to-market products. With enterprise storage requirements escalating and becoming more complex, factors such as data center consolidation, reliability, security, scalability and accessibility are more critical than ever. Enterprise data centers must be online all the time, fulfill requests from numerous users simultaneously, allow for constant growth and expansion and be maintained while in operation. Serial Attached SCSI meets all these demands while providing the highest performance at optimal capacity points.
