Seagate Announces Further Support for Developing Science and Engineering in Singapore

SINGAPORE - In conjunction with Singapore's Science, Technology and Biomedicine Month 2001 promoting interest in science and technology, Seagate announced its support of National University of Singapore's (NUS) Engineering Convention 2001 and Temasek Polytechnic's Temasek TechGames 2001.

"As one of the largest technology employers in Singapore, Seagate has a vested interest in the technical development of the workforce here," said James Chirico, senior vice president, Worldwide Operations. "As a technology leader in the IT industry, it is important for us to nurture our youth and foster their interest in the field of science and engineering."

This year's theme is "Engineering Applications in Life Sciences," focusing on the critical role engineers will play in this emerging industry. "There are exciting developments in the field of bioengineering from the design of artificial hearts to micro machines and robots," said Chirico. "At the heart of it all lies a need for digital storage. As the leading provider of storage technology, Seagate is taking the lead in investing in the future of storage."

Now in its thirteenth year, the convention is organized by NUS Students' Engineering Club to promote engineering as a profession and stimulate interest in research and development. Among the programs established is the Seagate Multimedia Competition. Open to students from engineering tertiary institutions as well as other academic institutions such as junior colleges and secondary schools, the competition tests the teams' creativity and technical execution in the area of multimedia.

"We are pleased to have Seagate as the main sponsor for Engineering Convention 2001," said Tay Chin Koon, committee chairperson. "This convention serves as a good avenue for promoting engineering as a profession to students from secondary schools and junior colleges. For Engineering undergraduates, this event gives them an opportunity to explore their talents and introduce them to new fields and applications in engineering. Our partnership with Seagate will help us wake the entrepreneurial spirit among our youths, stimulate their creativity and promote interest in computer aided design."

Seagate has also announced it is extending its support to Temasek Polytechnic's TechGames 2001 by sponsoring all prizes for the competitions and workshops. This year's TechGames is divided into six categories of competition/workshops to expose participants to the application of technology in our daily lives.

Seagate has taken a long-term perspective to its corporate giving program in Singapore, fostering a healthy balance between its professional performance and the Company's duty as a responsible corporate citizen. The NUS Engineering Convention is Seagate's latest effort to enhance relations with tertiary institutions. Other projects in its corporate giving program includes its Charity Golf Tournament in support of Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS), Nanyang Technological University's TechnoQuest Quiz, Singapore Management University's student volunteer program to bring arts to disadvantaged children in Singapore, and Changkat Primary School's Healthy Lifestyle Carnival.
