Seagate Provides Disc Drive Technology for Optics Storage's Digital Multimedia Recorder

SINGAPORE - Seagate Technology, the world's leading disc drive supplier for the consumer electronics (CE) market, announced today that its award-winning U Series disc drive has been chosen for the new Optics Storage Digital Multimedia Recorder (DMR). The DMR is a first-of-its-kind product that enriches the world of audio-visual home entertainment, providing true MPEG-2 digital recording technology to consumers.

Developed in Singapore, the Optics Storage DMR combines a programmable MPEG-1 and the MPEG-2 encoding/decoding compression engine with a hard disc drive, and the ability to play back existing DVD, SVCD, VCD, Audio CD and MP3 compact discs plus Internet access for remotely activated programming all in one convenient box. With the Optics Storage DMR customers can store an entire week's TV programs. The DMR will soon feature a Disc Creation model that will allow consumers to store recorded material onto CD-rewriteable discs. These conform to industry standard compliant Video CD or Super Video CD and, eventually, DVD when using a DVD-rewriteable drive.

"We are pleased to endorse Seagate's high-quality hard disc drives for use in our DMRs," said Dr Edwin Long, CEO of Optics Storage. "Seagate has worked closely with our engineers to test and develop new consumer products, and by leveraging the unique architecture of our DMR with Seagate disc drive technology, we are revolutionizing the world of home entertainment."

The U Series disc drive family is designed specifically for use in consumer electronics and volume PCs, and its popularity has fueled Seagate's growth as the leader in CE storage. Featuring its exclusive "sound barrier technology" (SBT), the U Series is the world's quietest hard drive for mainstream desktop computers and Digital Video Recorders. The U Series is available in a unique consumer electronics configuration: the U Series CE, for superior audio-video streaming, quiet operation and reduced power use. U Series disc drives offer best-in-class reliability and ship with Seagate's exclusive 3D Defense System for increased reliability and data protection. Seagate's 3D Defense System includes the patented SeaShell packaging, soft SeaShield. protective cover, SeaTools Suite diagnostic software and the award-winning DiscWizard installation software.

Continuing the tradition of Seagate's award-winning products, the U Series has garnered rave reviews from leading publications worldwide.
