5big Thunderbolt 2 crashes on Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan)

This article provides instructions in case your 5big crashes Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan) while updating device firmware.

You may find that the computer crashes when you attempt to update the firmware in a configuration with the following characteristics:

  • a 5big Thunderbolt 2

  • Configured as JBOD

  • Connected to a computer with Mac OS 10.11 (El Capitan).

If your attempt to update the firmware causes an error or freeze of your operating system, please follow this procedure:

  1. Shut down your computer.

  2. Disconnect all peripherals from the computer.

  3. Withdraw all five individual hard drives from the back of the 5big.

  4. Connect only the 5big to the computer.

  5. Power on your computer.

  6. Launch LaCie RAID Manager.

  7. Update the firmware of the 5big (instructions here).

  8. Once the firmware update is complete, shut down the computer.

  9. Disconnect the 5big.

  10. Push all five individual drives back into the 5big.

  11. Power on your computer.

At this point, the 5big device should function normally with up-to-date firmware.
